What happens when a Cowboy marries a Princess? You get two very crazy people and a ranch that is…The Perfect Combination of Rustic and Refined!
Until I met Marv, I was a city girl at heart. Marv was living in Drumheller (ranching country) and I was living in the booming metropolis of Calgary. We bought the ranch because it was right in the middle. Marv drove an hour east to work in the oilfields and I drove an hour west to work in downtown Calgary. We had the oil industry in common but that was about it! I was fascinated with life in the country, Marv less so about life in the city. I was happy to roast marshmallows over the campfire but he was not happy if eating out meant something other than a trip to the local truck stop! Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little! Over time we have found some lovely restaurants that serve great food and we both like to eat there. We are happy to recommend them when you come to the ranch!
Marv has been involved with horses all of his life. When we met, my only experience with horses was at a summer camp and that did not end well! Over time, Marv’s love of horses has rubbed off on me and together we have carved out a little piece of “Cowboy Heaven” on our beautiful ranch just east of Calgary.
Marv might tell you that I am a bit of a Princess but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to get my hands dirty…I just like to wash them before I eat, even out on the trail! We often take our guests for rides around the local countryside, in the Rocky Mountains or through the Canadian Badlands.
No burgers and beans served here! Our guests dine on the finest Alberta Beef, Pork and Chicken served with all the trimmings and fresh locally sourced vegetables. What is for dessert you ask? Toasted marshmallows of course! See what I mean about Rustic and Refined? For the more discerning palate we also serve cheesecake with local berries, mocha chocolate cake, every kind of pie imaginable or a chocolate fondue! I love to cook so tell what you like and I will make it!
Our cabins are well appointed and feature rustic touches or what I would call “Cowboy Chic.” The bedrooms are furnished with log or barn board pieces and the comfortable beds are decked out with lavish linens for the best sleep ever in a quiet country setting. Marv says it takes 10 minutes to de-pillow our bed before he can go to sleep so I have taken to de-pillowing and turning down the guest beds each evening.
Your stay at the ranch also includes a two-course hot breakfast delivered to your cabin daily. Enjoy “Cowboy Coffee” with eggs benny, waffles or pancakes. We also serve an Amish breakfast casserole and Ebelskivers, two of the favorites for repeat guests at the ranch. No need to dress for breakfast – just slip on one of our soft terry robes and sit down to a view that includes the lake, the mountains and the horses grazing in the pasture just steps from the deck of your cabin. We once had a mare deliver a foal while the guests were watching from their cabin and they wrote in the guest book: “You don’t get that at the Banff Springs!”
Want to relax? Book a massage, take a walk in the country, slip into the hot tub or just read a book in front of the fireplace. Enjoy a wine tasting at Field Stone Fruit Wines, a flight of craft beer at Origin Malting & Brewing or bring your beverage of choice back to the ranch and enjoy it while relaxing in a lounge chair.
Love to cook? The cabins are equipped with everything you need to make a meal including a BBQ on your private deck or enjoy a campfire supper. If you don’t like to cook we can prepare a four-course dinner for you and serve it to your cabin.
Looking for adventure? We offer Equestrian experiences for all levels of riders. Our guides will take you Kayaking on the Red Deer River or Fly Fishing on the Bow. Head out to Dinosaur Provincial Park to experience a real dinosaur dig or go hiking in Horseshoe Canyon. In the winter we have snow shoes for rent, and guided ice fishing adventures.
Whether you see yourself as a Cowboy or a Princess the ranch offers something for everyone! Hope to see you soon!
